Neophyte: from the Greek word neophytos, meaning “newly planted.”
A recent convert to a belief; a proselyte.
A beginner or novice.
Nobody wakes up and says, “I think I’ll join a cult today!”
When I discovered the Deer Tribe Metis Medicine Society, I was just an ordinary person looking for my life purpose and longing to heal from a painful childhood. A friend invited me to a “Native American” sweat lodge healing ceremony, where I met a charismatic medicine man named Silver.
Immediately, I was drawn to the songs, rituals, and vibrant people. Lured by the promise of enlightenment and wisdom, I completely immersed myself in this new spiritual community. At first, my life seemed to flourish—I landed better jobs and even found love. But beneath the facade of enlightenment was something far more insidious. It would be ten years before I discovered that my path to healing would cost me more than I ever imagined.
This is a true story about the most dangerous experience of my life. Because I share very personal and vulnerable information, I have chosen to publish this under a pen name to protect my family.
